Shingrix Vaccination: Protecting Against Shingles and Potentially Reducing Dementia Risk

Shingrix Vaccination: Protecting Against Shingles and Potentially Reducing Dementia Risk
Exciting News for Our Senior Patients!

Did you know that the shingles vaccine sitting in our practice fridge could do more than just prevent a painful rash? Recent ground-breaking research suggests it might also help protect your brain health!

The Promising Link Between Shingles Vaccination and Reduced Dementia Risk

A major new study published in Nature has revealed the strongest evidence yet that shingles vaccination may significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia. Researchers tracking over 280,000 older adults found that those who received a shingles vaccine were 20% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia over the following seven years compared to unvaccinated individuals.
Even more interesting? The protective effect appeared strongest in women!

Why This Matters to You

Dementia affects millions globally and is a leading cause of death. With one in three people developing dementia in their lifetime, any potential preventive measure is worth serious consideration.
While researchers are still exploring exactly how the shingles vaccine might protect against dementia, theories include:
•    Reducing inflammation in the nervous system
•    Preventing reactivation of the dormant chickenpox virus
•    Creating broader beneficial changes in the immune system

Shingrix: Your Defence Against Shingles and Possibly More

At North Sydney General Practice, we currently have the Shingrix vaccine available in our fridge. This modern shingles vaccine is:
•    Government-funded for all patients 65 and older
•    Administered as two doses, eight weeks apart
•    More effective than older shingles vaccines
The study described was conducted using an older vaccine (Zostavax), but similar research from Oxford University has shown an even stronger protective effect with the newer Shingrix vaccine that we offer.

Why Wait?

If you're over 65, the Shingrix vaccine is already fully funded by the government. If you're between 50-64, you may still benefit from the vaccination (though government funding isn't available for this age group).
With potential benefits that extend beyond shingles prevention to possibly include brain health protection, what's holding you back?
